Watercolor Flower Tutorial Peony Step 3

Overhead view of a watercolor peony tutorial in progress on a white worktable. A sheet of textured watercolor paper is secured on all four sides with pale masking tape, and a lightly penciled flower-and-stem outline is faintly visible. A hand at the right holds a blue-handled round brush and paints a very light blush-pink circular wash for the first layer of the peony blossom. At left is a large white mixing tray marked with dried and wet watercolor stains in pale pink, bright magenta-red, lime green, yellow, peach, and light blue. Along the top are a small handwritten watercolor color-reference card with painted swatches, an open rectangular watercolor pan set containing yellows, reds, pinks, greens, browns, blues, and dark colors, plus a clear organizer holding brushes and drawing tools. A pale pink water container is partly visible at upper right.

Step-by-step watercolor tutorial photograph showing the earliest stage of painting a peony flower. The watercolor paper is taped to a board or work surface with cream masking tape, and a faint pencil pattern for the peony, stem, and leaves is visible beneath the first wash. The painter uses a blue-handled round watercolor brush to lay down a soft, translucent blush-pink circular base for the flower head. The surrounding workspace includes a stained white mixing palette with pink, red, green, yellow, peach, and blue paint residue; an open multi-color watercolor pan set; a handwritten color swatch/reference card; a clear container filled with brushes and art tools; and a pale pink water cup.
